Some answers to some questions you have been posting:

One of the most repeated questions on this forum is: 'Where is the Joint Ops Demo? Give it to us now you mean people!' ( or something along those lines)

The Joint Ops demo will be released approx 6 - 8 weeks before the product ships. The reason for this is that we need to make sure the game is ready. Joint Ops not ready = Demo not ready.

Another repeated question is: 'Can we have new screens and viedos of Joint Ops?'

New screens and videos will be released in due time. The game does not hit for 4 or 5 months, so we want to make sure that when new screens etc are released, they look good and are indicative of what the final game will look like.

The third most repeated question is: 'Can we have a weapon/vehicle/map list?'

Again, all this info will become available when the time is right. We want to be able to get gamers excited about Joint Ops, and to do that we must release info in a timely manner. Also certain things are still being locked down, and we would not want to promise X vehicle and Y weapon and then ship the game without them!

Hope that has clarified a few things. More and more info on Joint Ops will be hitting in the build up to the launch. I am sure you will not be dissapointed with whats in store!

Well it seems that IGN did not like Team Sabre. Some of the points are valid I have to say but ????

I have to agree with this but it is nothing new. I commented way back when BHD came out that I did not like this. I reckon Nova implemented this strategy so that they could control the action more so that the AI looks as though it was doing a better job. I hope they ditch this for JO.

This criticism always annoys me. The punk that played the game probably went through the missions in easy mode ( yes you can alter it ). Many games include BF1942 have far worse AI than Nova so it puzzles me why the gaming press always pick on Nova,s AI.

So what ???? DF is for fun and it gives this out in buckets. Realism is for nerds and geeks who have no lives. DF is for people who probably enjoy life and like a laugh. Leave realism to others. Is this reviewer real ???? Well Mr McNamara the only way I can get any fun out of BF1942 and its " challenging AI " is by ramping up the teams to 400 per side. BF1942 has one of the lamest AI's I have ever seen. I completed all the SP maps in one afternoon. Where is the entertainment in that ???

INTERVIEW: TEAM SABRE UNSHEATHED!

It's verbal fencing ahoy as we chat with NovaLogic to find out all about the Delta Force: Black Hawk Down expansion

12:25 Due February 13, 2004 in Europe - typically it's already out in the US - Team Sabre is the Ritual-developed expansion for NovaLogic's Special Forces-themed first-person shooter epic Delta Force: Black Hawk Down. Returning to the fray, hardened combat vets oozing chutzpah from every pore will be engaging in manic firefights, dishing out destructive justice as they track down some bad eggs in Colombia and Iran.
We caught up with producer Joel Taubel to find out more about what we Europeans can expect from the add-on.

For those who might not be familiar with Team Sabre, can you give us a quick overview of the expansion pack?

Taubel: Team Sabre features 11 new missions set across two separate campaigns from the jungles of South America to remote islands in the Persian Golf.

The first campaign involves the Delta Force tracking down a drug lord in Colombia. Players engage in several missions aimed at taking the drug lord down and destroying his legacy. The second campaign is set in Iran where the player will engage in several missions against a rebellious Iranian group as they attempt to secure a foothold against the Iranian rebels.

The expansion pack will also ship with 30 new multiplayer maps across five new terrains. Players will also be able to play with three new weapons and as an SAS character.

What appealed about the Colombia and Iran's islands settings for the two campaigns? Why present gamers with these?

Taubel: By including the jungles of Colombia and the oil fields of Iran we are giving gamers a very different experience to Delta Force: Black Hawk Down. We deliberately chose locations that offer thick foliage (Colombia), which has massively increased the number of trees and shrubs for the multiplayer maps, which offers plenty of areas to hide.

The islands of Iran give us the opportunity to utilise some amazing coastal scenery combined with heavy industrial areas.

Can you give us some examples of the types of missions we'll be going in the expansion?

Taubel: In the Colombian missions, as well as playing a Delta Force operator, players will take the role of an Army Ranger in one of the missions that requires an airfield assault. Other missions will vary from an assault on an oil rig in the Persian Golf to fighting off suicide troops. Other missions include playing as SAS characters, and destroying enemy harbour emplacements.

Outside of the new campaigns and missions, how is Team Sabre enhancing the Black Hawk Down single-player experience?

Taubel: The expansion pack really shows off how flexible the game engine can be. Once players take a look at the Colombian terrains, they will be astonished to see how the engine can render a very dense jungle. It gives the players some wide open spaces to really explore.

What vehicles will be appearing in the single-player campaigns and will these be directly controllable or are they "on rails"? What sort of roles will vehicles be playing?

Taubel: Team Sabre will feature a number of new vehicles that will be "on rails". These vehicles will be used to transport you and your team mates during campaigns - these include a helicopter - the MH-53 PaveLow IV, a boat - RHIB (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat) and a light armoured reconnaissance vehicle - Vehicule Blinde Leger. All vehicles in Team Sabre will be A.I. controlled.

We toyed with the idea of making these player controllable, but decided against this after conversations we have had with our subject-matter experts. As Delta Force is a strike team, it relies on other parts of the military for infiltration and extraction transportation.

What improvements are you making to the game engine and AI, if any?

Taubel: The game engine has remained virtually the same, so it still retains the feel of the original. With two new locations it has allowed us to play around to create new thick foliage - which is perfect to hide in.

What specific new multiplayer features are you including in Team Sabre?

Taubel: Those who have played on NovaWorld will recognise the game types - while we have made no new game types, player favourites such as Team King of the Hill and Team Deathmatch will be making their return. We have of course also upped our multiplayer capacity to 50 players per game, which makes for some amazing battles.

Finally, is Team Sabre the first of a number of expansions for Black Hawk Down? Any hints on where you might be going with future add-ons?

Taubel: No news on any future expansion packs yet - but be sure to regularly check novalogic.com for announcements.

We enjoyed it very much driving the buggie, humvee, blackhawk, little bird and the fishing boat.

A few months ago, we saw some potential in NovaLogic's Battlefield killer. Then, the PR folks goaded us into coming back, dangling the promise of exclusive info and pictures that would blow our minds. They have. Thanks to an infusion of fresh insight and direction, Joint Ops now has blockbuster potential written all over it.

Enter new producer Joel Taubel, whose passion and direction have invigorated the project. "No one can stand alone in this industry," Taubel says while howling—he just shot down an Indonesian Super Puma helicopter with a Stinger missile. "It's a team effort all the way." Taubel's impact and the enthusiasm from the development team can be felt. Now, small but important features originally left out of the game—such as skins, voice support, a weapon-accuracy model, and balanced gameplay—are alive and kicking.

Which Way to Mogadishu?

Taubel, a former QA tester who worked his way up the NovaLogic ranks, puffs up with pride. "I am just a gamer with one hell of an opportunity to work with a very talented group in an industry I love." So far, it appears the team is gelling well, but more important, it also has a clear direction. As a tester, Taubel paid attention to what consumers had to say, and as a hardcore gamer, he's been playing a lot of stuff for perspective—games such as Battlefield 1942, Counter-Strike, Medal of Honor, and Day of Defeat. "I am willing to place Joint Ops in the great game category right beside these titles," he says. Sure, they have some stiff competition from the likes of Battlefield: Vietnam, but Taubel doesn't seem fazed. "A game can have some great innovative technology, but if executed poorly, it will fail. On the other hand, a well-executed but cookie-cutter game can fall into the same trap. What I can tell you is that we will come out swinging and give the competition a run for its money."

Slated for a late Q2 2004 release, Joint Ops looks primed to deliver. The improvements and added features could launch this game into stardom.




The Word: Lethal

One Bad Mofo
You've seen most of these character classes before: rifleman, sniper, heavy gunner, medic, and engineer. But there's more balancing here, to ensure team-oriented battles. The engineer, for example, can use a variety of explosives or fire a mortar. The vehicles and aircraft that once dominated the battlefield will now have to contend with Stinger missiles and the like. Yep, ground troops now have a chance—especially the Special Ops close-quarters battle class—which adds more depth to gameplay.

Special Ops units lack long-range capabilities, but they can move silently. "Being a close-quarters-combat fan myself, I immediately fell in love with the idea of the Special Ops class popping up in front of the enemy and opening up within five feet [of them], but we need to balance vehicles on each map," says Taubel. "We want to strike fear into the hearts of the enemy player. When he sees a small helicopter with four Special Ops units on the boards dropping in behind a tree line and [then] watches the bird lift off empty, he knows trouble is coming."
