Gamecloud hat ein Interview mit dem EA Expansion Producer David Yee geführt. Hier das Interview:

As if there was any doubt. Battlefield 2 became a huge best selling hit for developer Digital Illusions and publisher Electronic Arts when the multiplayer shooter sequel was released last June. Now DICE´s Canadian division is working on the first expansion pack for the game, Battlefied 2: Special Forces, for release later this fall. Gamecloud got a chance to chat briefly with the expansion´s producer David Yee to find out more about their plans for Battlefield 2: Special Forces.

Gamecloud - First, was Digital Illusions and Electronic Arts pleased with the reactions that Battlefield 2 received?

David Yee - I think I can speak for both DICE and EA when I say that everyone is very pleased with the critical acclaim that Battlefield 2 has received since its release. But the work isn’t over yet – we fully intend to support Battlefield 2 with the same level of post launch support that we were able to provide on previous games in the Battlefield franchise.

Gamecloud - When the time came to create Special Forces, what were the development team´s main goals?

David Yee - We began working on Special Forces with the team at DICE Canada before Battlefield 2 had gone gold. Our main goal was to take the Battlefield gameplay into a new domain. Since Battlefield 2 brought the franchise to the modern era, the possibilities were quite vast. We ended up going with the Special Forces theme because of all of the iconic opportunities it came with.

Gamecloud - What can you tell us about the new weapons that will be put into the expansion?

David Yee - There are 6 new armies in the expansion, and they use a mix of weapons from base BF 2 with some new weapons on certain kits. The flashbang and tear gas weapons are non-lethal and add new tactical elements when fighting in tight spaces.

Gamecloud - What can you tell us about the new vehicles that will be put into the expansion?

David Yee - The focus of Special Forces naturally leans toward an infantry experience, but we understand that vehicles are an integral part to any Battlefield game. We’ve made numerous additions to our vehicle roster, adding the Desert Raider, BMP3, the Hind and Apache attack helicopters as well as various other vehicles.

Gamecloud - What can you tell us about the new levels that will be a part of Special Forces?

David Yee - Special Forces features both night and daytime levels. All levels were designed with use of the grappling hook and zip line in mind, which gives players a great amount of flexibility in how they navigate the maps.

Gamecloud - What other new and improved gamelay elements will be a part of the expansion?

David Yee - The two biggest additions in Special Forces are the zip line and grappling hook. These two features give infantry advanced moment options and really bring up the number of possibilities on the Battlefield. Where in the past, hardcore players have memorized common routes and chokepoints, Special Forces creates moments where the enemy aren’t always going to come through the same alleyway or passage. It’s very satisfying to flank another squad, or attack spawn points in ways that weren’t possible before.

Gamecloud - Will there be any new graphical improvements made for Special Forces?

David Yee - The daytime levels use the same renderer as Battlefield 2. For nighttime, we’ve built a renderer that allows us to create compelling areas of light and dark that players can use to cover their movements. Of course there are other additions that act as a counter to this, such as night vision and flash bangs.

Gamecloud - What is the current status of the game´s progress and when will it be released?

David Yee - Right now the game is alpha, which means all of the features have been implemented. We are now doing as much bug fixing and polishing as we can before the game is scheduled to go gold.
