With Novalogic's long awaited military multiplayer shooter Joint Operations now gold and due for release to stores in mid-June, HomeLAN decided once again to contact the game's producer Joel Taubel to get an update on the game and the company's immediate plans for the future.
HomeLAN - First, now that the game has gone gold, how does the development team feel about the results of the game?
Joel Taubel - We are extremely pleased with how the game turned out. Everyone was helping out and looking for new ways to enrich the experience.
HomeLAN - Joint Operations has had several delays in its development. Can you give us more info on why the delays occurred?
Joel Taubel - We did not feel that the game would be ready by the promised release dates so we decided to hold it back for a while. There were major features that we wanted to put in that we did not feel were ready for prime time. So we pushed the dates back and decided to work on the features we wanted. I think it was well worth it.
HomeLAN - How has the extended time to beta test the game improved Joint Operations? Did the team put in or improve features that they originally thought they would not have the time to do before?
Joel Taubel - Yes the beta was a huge help. It allowed us to introduce new ideas and get a lot of real time feedback. It saved us from several big problems that we didn’t see coming as well. After listening to several members in the beta we would tune and tweak our weapons or vehicles to find a better balance. What we think is fair is not always what other people think is fair.
HomeLAN - What are Novalogic's plans to update the game once the title ships to stores? Will there be just patches or will there be new original content (maps, weapons, vehicles) released for free a la the Battlefield series?
Joel Taubel - We are going to be very aggressive in updating and keeping our content fresh. As to what we will be in the updates, we are keeping that under tight wraps. I can tell you that we will definitely be adding in a new map or two at a later date. Once the game is released, we will look at what the most popular requests are and take it from there.
HomeLAN - What can you tell us about the status for the game's mod tools? What kinds of tools will be available and will they be released in the box or via the net for a free download afterwards?
Joel Taubel - We will be releasing the mission editor shortly after launch, once we have had a chance to make a bit more consumer friendly. The mod tools will be addressed a little further down the line.
HomeLAN - Will there be any updated multiplayer public demos or perhaps a single player demo of Joint Operations?
Joel Taubel - Yes, there will be a new multiplayer demo coming out that shows all the new features that we put in over the last three months. As Joint Ops is a MP game, a single player demo will not be released.
HomeLAN - Does Novalogic have any plans for retail expansion packs at this point?
Joel Taubel - Yes we do. Several good ideas are coming forth and we are beginning pre-production work on it in about a week.
HomeLAN - Are there plans to bring Joint Operations to any of the current or perhaps even next generation consoles?
Joel Taubel - Yes there are. I can not go into too much detail but we are thinking about it.
HomeLAN - If Joint Operations is successful, are there any plans for a sequel and if so what features and content would you like to see put into a sequel?
Joel Taubel - There may well be a sequel if Joint Ops is successful. There are a lot of ideas that have been kicked around about what we could do. Since we nailed the large scale multiplayer environments with Typhoon Rising, we can do anything we want now. From jets to submarines we can do anything we want. We have the real estate and it’s just down to what makes a fun game and what is worth doing.
HomeLAN - Now that Joint Operations is done, what are Novalogic's plans for their next full game? Will it be a return to a previous franchise or an all new property?
Joel Taubel - We still have not decided that yet. Our focus is still very much on Joint Ops, and probably will be for another several months. We are going to continue to support Joint Ops and we have not moved out of that mind set.
HomeLAN - Finally is there anything else you wish to say about Joint Operations?
Joel Taubel - Making Joint Ops was a blast. I think that when people play Joint Ops they are going to come away from it wondering why everyone else is still doing 32 player games. When you are out there with 74 other teammates and all moving to take one point, it’s amazing. Small squads can work together and sometimes you even see Chinooks flying in formation coming up to the landing zone. Joint Ops will change the way you think of multiplayer games.
